The question “What is a leader?” can be answered in many different ways. My favourite is one I recently ran across: a leader is both a plumber and a poet.
Leader as Plumber: This is about ensuring an organization is running efficiently. Suitable objectives have been set, resources allocated and the right people, systems and processes are in place. It isn’t sexy, but it’s vital.
Leader as Poet: This is about articulating a powerful vision and purpose. Using words (and actions) to inspire employees and connect them to something bigger.
A great leader is both these things, an intoxicating blend of both the practical and the inspirational.
