Many of us have heard the word uttered during our careers. A well intentioned leader intones some version of the comforting phrase “I consider us more family than colleagues”.
What’s the problem? Clearly a cohesive team that respects and elevates each other is a powerful element of a well functioning corporate culture. Unfortunately, I’ve watched people stay in a bad professional situation out of misguided loyalty. Or, genuinely believe they are part of a loyal family right up to the moment they are fired.
Work can include a important and satisfying social element, but it is not family. You can still enjoy what is has to offer and be pragmatic at the same time.
