When encountering a decision that appears ill advised, assume the person who made it is competent and always start by asking why they made the decision they did. Be curious, not judgmental.* Either you will learn more about the circumstances behind the decision or your questions will prompt a discussion and possible reconsideration. Either is so much more productive than walking around and muttering incoherently about stupidity in the workplace.

Iโ€™ve learned this the hard way. Inferring lack of competency or ill intent from someoneโ€™s actions, only to learn there was more to it. So much opportunity wasted.
