The workplace is made up of people with diverse backgrounds, interests, personalities and philosophical bents. It is a key element of the strength of any company. However, to achieve the benefits of a heterogenous workforce, we must be able to work effectively together. Respect for each other and our differences is vital. How we treat each other matters.

We have all done, or said, something we regret. While we must deal with the interaction that went awry, we understand such a failure usually does not define who a person is. Warning – this cultural element has great potential to be misunderstood. Certain behaviour, or repeated poor behaviour, is inexcusable.

Cultural element 2 comes from a long career, watching companies tolerate continued, disruptive behaviour. Often because the person was vital (subjective) to the organization. As Captain Picard wisely intoned, βThe line must be drawn here! This far, no further!β It is possible to hire talented people who arenβt jerks.
Cultural element 3 comes from an expression my wife is fond of using – βyouβre not the worst thing youβve ever doneβ. It is a sage reminder that compassion and empathy should never be in short supply. Life, while sparkly, can be a struggle for many of us.
